Certificate in Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation

Four courses, including two required courses and two elective courses/experiences:

1.     Two of the following five courses are required (one course must be done during the first two years of medical school):

             a. MEDC 30114 Scholarship & Discovery Health Care Delivery Systems

                                               i.     50 units, Spring Quarter. Most students would complete this course during Year 1.

             b. CCTS 46001 Quality and Safety

                                               i.     50 units, Autumn Quarter

             c. MSBI 33400 Healthcare Delivery Science

                                               i.     50-100 units, Winter Quarter

             d. BMSC 41200 Topics in Healthcare Delivery Science

                                               i.     100 units, Autumn Quarter

             e. BUS 40206 Healthcare Business Analytics

                                               i.     100 units, Winter Quarter

             f. MEDC 30050 Healthcare Technologies and the Future of Medical Practice.

                                               i.     100 units, Autumn Quarter

Students may petition to substitute a similar course offered through another University of Chicago graduate school to meet this requirement.

Two elective curricular experiences (may be completed via any combination of the following options):

a. Completion of the third course above

b. Completion of 13 Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School Modules for Certificate in Quality and Safety (http://www.ihi.org/education/IHIOpenSchool/Courses/Pages/OpenSchoolCertificates.aspx)

                                               i. Approximately 1 hour per module

c. All four Educational and Clinical Leaders Improving Performance with Structured E3L (ECLIPSE) training modules (https://cme.uchicago.edu/ECLIPSE)

                                               i. Approximately 1 hour per module

d. 13 American Medical Association Health Systems Science Modules (https://edhub.ama-assn.org/health-systems-science/by-topic)

                                               i. Approximately 1 hour per module

e. Completion of iCorp at Polsky Center (https://polsky.uchicago.edu/programs-events/polsky-i-corps/)

The goal of the certificate is to become involved and educated about Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation at the University of Chicago.

Required: At least 16 HDSI-sponsored events/lectures advertised through the HDSI listhost

o   Medical students must participate in at least 10 during their first two years of medical school

o   Participation in these events will be documented via a Google form or Redcap submission form that includes a brief reflection

- Required: Present at the Quality & Safety Symposium at least once

- Choose one from the following:

o   Lead a session of the HDSI Outcomes Research Workshop, co-sponsored with the center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) (https://chess.uchicago.edu/events/orw/)

o   Lead the HDSI journal club (paired with a faculty discussant)

o   Apply for a Travel Grant through HDSI

o   Participate in a healthcare innovation event at MATTER (https://matter.health/)

For medical students, the scholarly project that is part of the S&D Health Services and Data Science/Healthcare Delivery Innovation Science tracks may serve as the practicum.  Please note, you do not need to be part of these S&D tracks in order to be eligible for the HDSI Certificate Program.

Participation in a Kaizen event will also count toward the practicum requirement.
